BOTTLE BY BOTTLE: THE STATE OF SPIRITS

Shopping for spirits is becoming faster, more guided and more decisive. Across the spirits and wider drinks category, shelves are increasingly organised to help shoppers make confident choices through clarity, structure and recognisable visual cues.

In the first edition of Shelf Watch, we explore how the category is evolving, from the growing role of repetition and visual systems to the influence of merchandising, occasion-led solutions and communication beyond the bottle.

FOUR THEMES EMERGED:

  1. The category is increasingly organised around confidence and clarity
Shelves are working harder to reduce effort and support faster decision-making.

  2. Recognition is built through repetition, scale and consistency
Brands are creating stronger visibility through systems that build memory and familiarity.

  3. Impact extends beyond packaging into the wider shopper journey
Brand activation, displays and communication are playing a greater role in driving visibility and conversion.

  4. The strongest brands make decisions easier through complete solutions and occasions
From paired serves to established rituals, brands are helping shoppers navigate the category with confidence.

WHY this matters:

This isn't a complete reset of the aisle. It's a rebalancing of how the category works.

Exploration still exists, but alongside clearer cues and faster decisions. Theatre still matters, but is increasingly delivered through brand activation, displays and shop-floor moments that create visibility beyond the shelf, like our recent work with Jim Beam - see more here. And design is working harder at scale, shifting from subtle signals to recognisable systems that build memory quickly, see more of what other brands are up to here.

Through analysis and real-world examples from brands including Jack Daniel's, Fever-Tree and Aperol (more on the Spritz and Aperitivo landscape here), the report explores how drinks brands can build visibility, strengthen recognition and create more effective shopper experiences in increasingly competitive environments.

Combining Wonderworks' shopper insight with observations from today's drinks category, Shelf Watch provides a practical snapshot of where the category is heading and the opportunities emerging for brands willing to adapt.

As a creative drinks agency, we help brands understand how shoppers engage with the category and where opportunities exist to create greater visibility, distinctiveness and impact.
