WHY GREAT PARTNERSHIPS NEED MORE THAN GREAT CREATIVE | WONDERWORKS
Explore why global partnerships need scalable activation systems, not just creative ideas. Insights from Wonderworks' work with the Jim Beam Global team.
Global partnerships create opportunity. Turning that opportunity into activation is where the real challenge begins.
Every partnership starts with ambition. New audiences, new occasions and new opportunities to create relevance. Yet the announcement is often the easiest part. The real challenge begins when global teams need to turn strategic intent into something consumers can actually experience.
For drinks brands, that means showing up consistently across retail, on-premise, events, merchandise and digital channels, often across multiple markets at the same time. Success is rarely defined by the partnership itself. Success is defined by how effectively that partnership comes to life in market.
Partnerships rarely struggle because the idea is wrong
Most partnerships begin with a strong idea. Where they often become more difficult is in the transition from strategy to execution.
As launch dates approach, local teams need answers. They need assets, guidance and confidence that what they are building aligns with the wider vision. The strongest programmes recognise this from the outset, creating clarity not just for consumers, but for the people responsible for bringing the work to life.
Markets need systems, not just assets
A hero visual can create attention. A system is what sustains momentum.
What markets need is not a collection of individual assets, but a framework that helps them activate consistently while still responding to local realities. The most effective systems balance structure with flexibility, creating alignment across markets without becoming restrictive.
The goal is simple. Give local teams the confidence to make good decisions without losing sight of the bigger brand story.
Bringing racing energy into the Jim Beam brand world
This was the challenge we faced when working with the Jim Beam Global team on its partnership with the Cadillac F1 Team. The objective was not simply to introduce racing cues into the brand. It was to identify the point where the energy, pace and intensity of racing could connect naturally with the unmistakable character of Jim Beam. Working alongside the team, we developed a flexible visual language built around a woodcut-inspired illustration style and a shared colour system designed to bring both worlds together. The result created a platform that felt authentic, scalable and distinctly Jim Beam from the very first activation.
Great activation lives far beyond the key visual
The visual identity was only the beginning.
That foundation expanded into a broader toolkit spanning on and off-premise POS, merchandise and activation assets designed for race-day occasions and beyond. Every element needed to feel premium, work hard and, most importantly, be practical for local teams to implement. Consumers do not experience brand systems. They experience the outputs of those systems. The more effectively a programme supports local execution, the more consistently consumers experience the intended brand story.
Consistency should never come at the expense of reality
One of the biggest challenges facing global drinks brands is balancing consistency with relevance.
Every market operates differently. Retail environments vary, activation opportunities change and local teams face different commercial realities. The strongest programmes recognise this. Rather than forcing uniformity, they create shared principles that allow teams to adapt while protecting the integrity of the brand.
Consistency matters. But only if it works in the environments where consumers actually encounter the brand.
The partnerships that deliver lasting value are built to scale
Partnerships are often measured by the size of the announcement. Their long-term success is usually determined by something less visible: the quality of the activation.
The programmes that create the greatest value are rarely those with the biggest launch moment. More often, they are the programmes that give teams the tools, confidence and flexibility needed to show up consistently long after the initial excitement has passed.
Because great partnerships need more than great creative.
They need systems built for reality.
